DEPARTMENT:

APPLICATION DEADLINE:

Job description

The Mathematical Institute at Utrecht University is offering a PhD position. The successful candidate will work on research in analytic number theory under the supervision of Lola Thompson. This is a standard Dutch 4-year PhD position. As such, the focus is on research, but it will require some modest work as a teaching assistant (in English). The goals of the research project are flexible and will be adapted to the interests and strengths of the PhD candidate. Possible topics include: multiplicative number theory, arithmetic statistics, algorithmic number theory, and/or applications of number theoretic methods to problems in spectral geometry.

The Mathematical Institute has a vibrant Number Theory group consisting of Gunther Cornelissen, Valentijn Karemaker, Marta Pieropan, Lola Thompson, and their postdocs and PhD students. The group runs a weekly Number Theory Seminar, and participates in a wide range of national and international seminars and conferences. Utrecht University’s Mathematical Institute is internationally recognized for its research in both pure and applied mathematics.

Qualifications

The candidate must have an MSc degree (or equivalent) in mathematics in hand prior to the start date. A strong background in number theory, including both analytic and algebraic number theory, is advantageous. That said, mathematical maturity and motivation are the most important. The candidate should be able to communicate effectively in English (knowledge of Dutch is not required).

Offer

We offer a temporary position (1.0 FTE) for four years in an international working environment. The full-time gross salary – depending on previous qualifications and experience – ranges between €2,395 and €3,061 per month in the fourth year. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8%, a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year and funding to attend international conferences and workshops.
In addition to the employment conditions laid down in the CAO for Dutch Universities, Utrecht University has a number of its own arrangement
